Travel Photos – Hawaii & Caribbean

Finally around to uploading images from my recent trip to the Big Island, Hawaii! Mike and I headed there back in mid October to spend some time with my parents (who headed there from Australia) over the course of a couple of weeks. It’s no secret that I’ve been homesick, but it definitely helped to have a short break and see a couple of familiar faces before I returned to Denver to tackle the last of this year’s wedding season. :)
Also included below, are some images from my most recent trip to the Caribbean. Yet another thing to scratch off my bucket list! It was also my first cruise ever, and a wonderful way to spend the otherwise cold weather of Colorado. Sun, where have you been all my life?! hehe

On a serious note, it’s honestly been a wonderful treat to travel so much this year and see so many sights and sounds. I admit that learning to juggle work and pleasure when it comes to taking photographs has been an interesting struggle for me this year. I’m finding now that in my spare it’s difficult for me to feel motivation to pick up a camera and photograph – even when it’s been one of my favorite things to do. I hope that 2012 will see me overcoming that struggle, and working on more landscape, macro, and street photography outside of my wedding/portrait schedule.
Being on vacation however, feels like permission to photograph for the sheer joy and love of it. There’s a sense of freedom that comes with photographing for absolutely no-one but yourself, and few things make me happier. In a way, it brings me back to being 17 years old again, walking up and down the Mornington pier in search of photography inspiration. This is where I fell in love, this is where my photography roots lie, and this is where I should always return.

Below are *many* images taken over the course of my last two trips. They were not meant to be *perfectly* in order, and they not edited to be *perfectly* streamlined with one another. I simply want to share a different side of me and my photography – one that I have embraced for years before weddings first crossed my path. I hope you enjoy them!

Shannon & Drew, Denver Wedding Photography

I’ve been musing over how to best discuss the contents of this post, but I can’t imagine there’s anything I can say to bring justice to what an amazing experience it has been to photograph Shannon and Drew.

Shannon first touched based with me during my trip to Australia back in February. Her e-mail was short and sweet, but within a couple of e-mails we had a date and place set up to meet face to face and discuss options for her wedding date. Meeting Shannon and Drew for the first time was such a fun experience. They were down to earth, artistic, geeky, and a complete riot! So, when I received a call from them several days later to tell me their decision, I just about burst into tears with happiness.
This season I have worked with some absolutely incredible human beings who despite meeting many other fantastic photographers in the Denver region, saw something in this geeky, awkward girl’s way of seeing the world that they could relate to. There is never a day that goes by that I don’t feel thankful to those who put their trust in me to capture some of the most important moments of their lives.

While I have uploaded images to my Facebook group from this wedding, I had yet to blog this wedding until now. So to clarify, this is both my first main shooter wedding of the season and one of the most fun weddings I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of so far through this rollercoaster ride a wedding season, and one that I won’t forget anytime soon.

Shannon and Drew chose to exchange their vows during an intimate church wedding at the Eisenhower Chapel, followed by the reception in the hall of the Catholic school Shannon teaches Literature at. Between the ceremony and reception, Shannon and Drew took the opportunity to borrow a golf cart to transport us (ie: bridesmaids, groomsmen, photographers) to the reception location and grab some fun shots along the way. Let me say that nothing beats a bridal party that has an amazing sense of humor, and are up for any oddball idea that I throw at them!
The reception was a blast – tears flowed, great food was fed to all, and games were set up outside the hall for those who preferred to nurse their competitive streak instead of dancing. Every single person walked away from this evening with a smile on their face, and love in their hearts.

While prior to the wedding day I had the opportunity to shoot with Shannon on a couple of other occasions, attend a couple of her famous pizza nights, and hit the town for her hens night, Shannon and I had promised to make an effort to keep in touch after her wedding day.
Shannon, Drew, and Jason (the best man – who is a GREAT guy!) attended a potluck dinner party at my place, introduced them to my circle of close friends, attended a couple more pizza nights, celebrated Thanksgiving at Shannon and Drew’s house (she’s a WONDERFUL cook y’all!), and just this weekend they all attended the party I threw for my husband’s 30th birthday. Needless to say, I think we have both held on to our ends of that promise. :)

Lastly, in the recent spirit of Thanksgiving I want to say this…
Shannon and Drew – you’re both beautiful, extraordinary people that I am so, so thankful for. Thank you for being my clients, thank you for trusting my artistic eye and being so damn fun to shoot with, but most importantly – thank you for welcoming me into your life as a friend. It’s truly been a honor.

Sandy & Greg – Della Terra, Estes Park Wedding

As most will know, last Wednesday was a day of chills, broken branches, and snow. I had been anticipating this wedding for months, hoping that the weather would be as kind as 2011 and grace us with warm weather until late November. Unfortunately, winter waits for no-one. Fortunately, this made for gorgeous snow images without heavy snow on a chilly, late October afternoon. I must applaud Sandy and Greg however, as they were absolute troopers. A decision was made to hold the ceremony outdoors through the freezing conditions, and yet they made it through their first look, ceremony, and portrait session like champs! They married at the breathtaking Della Terra in Estes Park, surrounded by 90 close family and friends, most of which traveled in from Chicago to bear witness to this momentous union.

Sandy and Greg, it’s been nothing short of wonderful getting to spend time with you both and capturing the love and laughter of your wedding day. You are both truly amazing people, and I look forward to seeing your [10 year and ongoing!] relationship grow through marriage, and making sure we exchange more tv show recommendations and party invites through the months to come! Thank you for your trust, kindness, and friendship. It’s been an honor. <3

Lastly, a quick shout out to John Bosley, who has been my wonderful, dependable second shooter on several weddings this season!
Another shout-out to Sandy and Greg’s fantastic wedding planner, who was an absolute delight to work alongside – Marcea of Something Blue.
One last shout-out to Sandy’s awesome make-up artist – Liz! Keep up the great work!

Wedding – Melissa & Chris

Our fingers have been crossed for months. After all, an outdoor ceremony and reception at the beginning of October could go many ways in a state like Colorado. Would it snow, rain, or would the sun grace the skies for this gorgeous occasion? As it turned out, luck was on our side. With the exception of an hour or so where the sun threatened to roast our retinas (haha), October 1st could not have gone any more smoothly.  Everyone was in high spirits, and *nothing* was about to spoil Melissa’s good mood and excitement for the day ahead!

Firstly, I have to say with all honesty that I’ve never met someone with as much cheer and a skip in their step as Melissa. From the first time we met for a wedding consultation in a small Denver coffee shop, I knew she was someone I would enjoy working with immensely. She simply has this glow and aura about her that brightens the mood of everyone she approaches. As for Chris, there’s such honesty to the way he addresses people. He’s a littler quieter, but just like Mel he is grounded, down to earth, and fun to be around. There’s such a genuine tenderness in the way they approach one another, but on the other hand they are both complete goofballs!

Melissa and Chris’s wedding was an amazing collaboration of friends and family who worked strenuously to make this a wedding to remember. I was quite frankly blown away by the time and attention to detail that went into organizing this event. Everything from the venue, to the wedding planning, catering, flower arrangement, beer, decorations, wedding cake, music… was a contribution from a family or friend who loved Melissa and Chris. Just amazing.
Thank you again Melissa and Chris for having me play such an important role in documenting your wedding day, and for being so damn fun and positive people to be around. It was an absolute pleasure to have met and worked with such an amazing couple. I look forward to catching up soon for more drinks and laughter!Fort Collins wedding photographerFort Collins wedding photographyFort Collins wedding

The photography is truly awesome, you did an amazing job!!

Eliza - What a sweet wedding! I love outdoors dining, something we never get to do en masse here in the UK, and the whole reception being outdoor lit with fairy lights just gives such a magical feel! I also love the group shots, so much fun.
